Design, fabrication, and installation of tensile membranes and shade systems for the state-of-the-art Reef Magic Pontoon — a 1,003m² three-level vessel accommodating 450+ guests on the Great Barrier Reef. Sail Structures delivered 4 tensile membranes (222m²), 2 lifeguard tower membranes (18m²), and 2 shade sails (71m²) using Mehler FR700 Nano and Monotec 370 fabrics.
Installing tensile membranes on a floating marine vessel presents unique engineering challenges. The structures needed to withstand open-ocean wind loads, salt spray corrosion, and constant movement, while providing reliable shade and weather protection for hundreds of passengers daily.
Sail Structures engineered bespoke tensile membrane canopies using marine-grade Mehler FR700 Nano and Monotec 370 fabrics, designed to accommodate the dynamic forces of a floating platform. All hardware was specified in marine-grade stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance. The project was completed in collaboration with naval architect G.A. Glanville & Co. and builder English Engineering, launching in April 2022.
